Program:  While many see our aging society as a problem, groups such as Encore. org and Experience Matters  view it as a solution.  Neither young nor old, the vast population moving into midlife offers an extraordinary resource.  They are looking for a new model combining elements of work, service, and social impact – an “encore” or “encore career.”  Some are able to do so as unpaid volunteers or in roles in their communities or families. But for many, encore work can bring a new source of continued income.

Since 2011, when the first baby boomers turned 65, some 10,000 Americans have passed that milestone each day, a trend predicted to continue through 2020. Over the next decade, we will evolve from a population where one in ten Americans are over 65 to one where one in four are. By 2030, more Americans will be over 65 than under 15.

For the first time in history, many of us have an extra 20 or 30 “bonus” years of active, healthy life, after having developed extensive skills, knowledge and life experience.  And this phase of life will be the longest that’s not defined by children, work or education.  These lifestyle changes are also impacting community design especially here in Arizona

Today join Deborah Blakely from Cecilian Worldwide, Sally Clifford from Experience Matters, and Chris Irish from DC Ranch -three leading experts who are using the latest research to meet the lifestyle needs of these engaged active adults.

Raffle/Charity: Time to start thinking about the Foothills Food Bank summer meal program for the children in the greater valley area. While we will collect monetary donations this month and have our raffle, in May (no raffle), in addition to money, we ask that you check your pantry and bring just ONE (or more) item from the Wish List to the May luncheon. You will find the write up about this amazing charity and their food, etc. wish list in the May Outreach section.
